Project Description

Ignoto a me stesso

Unknown to myself

is composed by a series of big format portraits in black and white, taken of both Italian and international artists.

The project draws inspiration from a poem by Paul Valéry (“If I were to find myself in front of this effigy/ unknown to myself, oblivious to my lineaments/ In many horrid folds of anguish and energy / I would read my torments and recognise myself”) and from an homonymous publication which confronts the poems and the portraits of the writers

The images, taken during the course of the last ten years, follow the stylistic criteria imposed by the means adopted, an optical bench of the seventies which requires very long execution times and a formal coherence dictated by the means. Furthermore, the extreme fragility of the film used, the Polaroid 55, contains some elements of casualty and disturbance, which at times deliver surprising results that modify the vision’s perspective.

Next to these portraits, the artists are asked to supply a work/self portrait of their own as to show the artist’s point of view of himself next to the photographer’s point of view.
